The Swann Report (1985) Education for All Report of the Committee of Enquiry into the Education of Children from Ethnic Minority Groups Cmnd. 9453 London: Her Majesty's Stationery Office 1985
Notes on the text Swann was the final report of the Committee of Enquiry into the Education of Children from Ethnic Minority Groups. The Committee's interim report, published in 1981, was the Rampton Report, which is also online. Swann was a major report. Its 851 pages contain 16 chapters, 5 appendices and 40 or so tables (but no alphabetical subject index). There is also introductory material and a section containing the main conclusions and recommendations. Many of the chapters include annexes. The report is presented here in its entirety. The formatting of the text (bold, italics, centred etc) is a reasonably accurate representation of the printed version. However, please note that the pages presented here are not exact facsimiles of the original printed version: the font (Times, Arial etc) and size of print - and therefore the number of words to a line and lines to a page - are determined by the settings you have chosen for your web browser. There are two other differences between the printed and online versions: Many of the subheadings in the report are printed in the left-hand margin. I have moved these into the body of the text. In a handful of cases this has meant dividing a paragraph into two. In this web version of the report, the larger tables are shown as links in the text - clicking on one opens a new window displaying the relevant table. The printed version of the report contains dozens - if not hundreds - of spelling mistakes (of which perhaps the most glaring is 'Hucklebury Finn'!) and wrongly placed commas and speech marks. I have corrected all those I spotted. Anything I've added by way of explanation is shown [in square brackets]. |
